Why walls get damp inside
When the inside of a wall shows damp patches, peeling paint or white salt deposits, the water is usually coming through the outside. Wind-driven monsoon rain soaks into hairline cracks, porous plaster and the gaps around windows, pipes and AC brackets. Side walls between buildings, which are hard to reach and rarely repainted, are the worst affected.
Repainting the inside only hides the problem for a few months. On a sound wall with no cracks, a good waterproof exterior paint helps. Once cracks and seepage have started, the cracks need filling and a proper waterproofing coat is needed underneath the paint.
